Ruth Hubbard, professor of biology emerita at Harvard University, is a widely known scientist and feminist, recognized for her research on visual systems, her work on women's health issues, and her critiques of science. In her recent research, she has addressed the complicated ethical issues of genetic testing and gene therapy. Professor Hubbard left Vienna a few months before the Nazi invasion and came to the United States. A Harvard Ph.D., she began her scholarly work on vision in collaboration with Nobel Prize-winning scientist George Wald during World War II. In the late 1960s, she turned her attention to the status of women in scientific professions. Lately she has focused her critical eye on the fields of genetics and molecular biology. In 1992 she received the American Institute of Biological Sciences Distinguished Service Award. For her achievements on behalf of women and of science, SMU is honored to award Ruth Hubbard the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.
